The difference between lamination and encapsulation lies in how the protective layers are applied to the material and the level of coverage they offer. Here’s a breakdown:
Lamination:
- Process: A thin plastic film is adhered to the surface of the material (paper, card, etc.) using heat or pressure.
- Coverage: The edges of the material are usually exposed; the laminate covers only the printed front and back surfaces without sealing the edges.
- Uses: Ideal for enhancing the durability and appearance of printed items like menus, posters, or certificates while maintaining a lightweight finish.
- Benefits: Protects against water, dirt, and wear while offering options like matte or glossy finishes. However, it’s not fully waterproof due to unsealed edges.
Encapsulation:
- Process: The material is completely encased in a thicker plastic film, with the plastic extending beyond the edges and sealed together.
- Coverage: Fully seals the material, covering the entire surface and edges for complete protection.
- Uses: Often used for items that need long-term preservation or complete waterproofing, such as ID cards, outdoor signage, or frequently handled documents.
- Benefits: Provides superior protection against water, dirt, and damage, making it highly durable and weather-resistant.
In short, lamination focuses on protecting the surfaces, while encapsulation offers full-edge sealing for maximum durability. Let me know if you’d like advice on choosing the best method for your needs!
Lamination will only be applied to printed sides.
